<i>"Dr. Ryan Lockwood is known as a professor who deeply cares for his students. Having grown up as an orphan, he now serves as a literature professor at Pepperdine University, his old alma mater. Located in Malibu, California, Pepperdine holds some of his most treasured memories. It's where he dated and married his first love, and it's where he met his two best friends, Clayton "Finn" Fincannon (The Mason Jar) and Brian "Oz" Bailey (Alabama Irish). </i></div>

<i>Now, Ryan's on track to become the department Chair, a position he’s dreamed of since graduate school. At just thirty–two years old, life couldn't be better. But when his wife passes away unexpectedly, and his grandmother follows soon after, Ryan falls into a deep depression. </i></div>

<i>His grandmother leaves him her vineyard in Tennessee, where Ryan spent his childhood summers. Since the estate hosts sell-out jazz concerts and the best wine in the southeast, Ryan plans to sell the estate to the highest bidder. But when he visits the vineyard, he meets Rachel Young, the twenty–five year old daughter of the vine dresser. Rachel is good–sensed, hard–working, and she's one of the prettiest women Ryan’s ever encountered.</i></div>

<i>Ryan has sworn to never fall in love again, the vineyard is auctioned at three times it's value, and Pepperdine offers him his dream. Now, Ryan must make a decision: Return to his career and friends in California, or begin a new chapter in life with a young love in Tennessee.</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: 1.3em; orphans: 2; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; widows: 2;">
<i>A love story set among the beaches of Malibu, and the lakes and pastures of Tennessee, Young Vines teaches us that sometimes we must let go of old dreams to embrace new ones."</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin-bottom: 1.3em; orphans: 2; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; widows: 2;">
I've had the privilege of reading both <i>The Mason Jar</i> and <i>Alabama Irish </i>so I was very excited to be able to continue the story with <i>Young Vines</i>! This line stood out to me more than anything else: "Sometimes we have to let go of old dreams in order to embrace new ones." Though this line was spoken towards the end of the story, it sums up the journey Ryan went on throughout the whole book. Of letting go of the plans he had for his life and embracing the opportunities before him. This really spoke to me because we can't hold on so tightly to what we think life will look like that we miss out on what's in front of us. We can't be afraid of moving forward just because it looks differently than what we expected or planned for. I like the thought Ryan had that "It's our attitude and our responses that make or break us." That statement is so timely with life right now! So many things are out of my control but I <i>can</i> control how I respond! Do I look at the unexpected as an adventure or a disappointment? I really enjoyed this book! Being from Tennessee myself, it automatically had a place in my heart! I immediately understood the pull Ryan felt at the beauty of his grandmother's vineyard! I like the role that she played in his life. It makes me think of the summers I spent with my grandparents growing up. Overall, an easy read and book I thoroughly enjoyed! This is the perfect book to curl up with and read during a weekend!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Following Jesus doesn't guarantee sunny skies and smooth sailing. In fact, the waters of life are often tumultuous, crashing over us. Sometimes we can feel that we're drowning in a sea of confusion, division, frustration, complacency, or disillusionment. We need more than a shallow faith to survive the deep waters of life. </i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Into the Deep is an invitation to dive headfirst into a life of fearless faith. With endearing warmth and authenticity, Lauren Gaskill shares how she and others have learned to swim with Jesus in the deep waters of life - facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, and chronic illness - only to discover a more authentic, enduring faith that cannot be shaken by circumstances. In addition to examining the character of God and the lives of women and men in the Bible, she provides practical examples and tools that help us take our faith to the next level by learning to make decisions b faith, control our reactions to overwhelming situations, and life a life rooted in love. Get ready to exchange fear and frustration for the boldness, courage, and holy confidence that lead to a life of deep faith and joy!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The title of this book caught my eye. I immediately thought of the song, "Oceans" by Hillsong when I saw the cover of the book and knew I wanted to read it! I love what Lauren says in the first chapter, "...when I finally put all my faith in Jesus, saving hope entered my story." She talks about the difference between knowing and believing God and how much we need Him. She says this book is an invitation. "It is an invitation to dive headfirst into faith, leaving fear behind in exchange for the boldness and courage that come from relying on Christ." Each chapter has "Going Deeper" questions and a prayer at the end, to help you reflect and get the most from the book. I really like what Lauren says in chapter 2: "The more I have clung to Jesus, the less confusing and chaotic my life has become. The only solution to our brokenness and the only One worthy of our faith is God, who never fails. The world may fail us, but He never will." And she talks about what faith is God looks like. "A deep and satisfying faith goes beyond acknowledging God to relying on Him in every area of life. This kind of faith doesn't just believe God exists, it puts faith into action by expressing confidence in who God says He is and what Jesus did on the cross." That makes me think of one of my favorite verses, Hebrews 11:1: <span class="text Heb-11-1-Heb-11-2">"The fundamental fact of existence
is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under
everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we
can’t see (Message)." This book is a great read to boost your faith! </span></div>

<i>Being rich is fine, but when wealth comes from striking oil, it can make a slippery mess for a family who doesn't know what to do with it. The Bucklin cousins are all together again, and this family reunion is shaping up to be another hot mess.</i></div>

And Marybeth and Bucky continue to fumble and bumble as they learn just how to handle being rich.</i></div>

<i>The Bucklin family is known for drama - and family drama knows no bounds.</i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I read Debby Mayne's <i>High Cotton</i> and fell in love with the town of Pinewood and the Bucklin family. Reading <i>Fit to be Tied</i> was just as enjoyable as the first book and I can't wait to see what happens to this family in next book! As a girl from the South, I loved all the Southern expressions! This was a great book from beginning to end! Each of the family members is facing something different, making them all relatable. Though a fiction book, I was encouraged and inspired by Sally and her journey. To see her figuring out her own life and finding what her passion is.<i> Fit to be Tied</i> is full of humor and romance and a great read!<br /><i></i></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiquxrB7XZt69leZhBSWDTyVD2enTEEruIZLHzYZV04c6qAVDWfW6YpyLsutbGP3UDC9yxF75lXFok7HQHNiqYVl3CtglGZzbFDDSyS4wtA8BO4Nj_WRl68B89nVq4LoI4qjrfLLePdoz4p/s1600/351245.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="263" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiquxrB7XZt69leZhBSWDTyVD2enTEEruIZLHzYZV04c6qAVDWfW6YpyLsutbGP3UDC9yxF75lXFok7HQHNiqYVl3CtglGZzbFDDSyS4wtA8BO4Nj_WRl68B89nVq4LoI4qjrfLLePdoz4p/s320/351245.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Every one of us is guaranteed to experience the unexpected. But when the unpredictable shakes our faith, we hide behind our defenses, trade our hope for fear, and end up living a smaller version of the grand story God wrote for us. Is it possible to not only expect the unexpected, but even embrace it?</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Christine Caine will raise your trust in God to new levels so that nothing will knock you off your feet. Through biblical insight and her signature inspirational storytelling, Christine will help you step into the adventurous life God has planned for you - unknowns and all. Using dramatic examples from her own journey, Christine offers real-life strategies to help you move from fear and worry to hope and trust in God. She will walk with you through dealing with the betrayal and the disappointment of ruined plans, give practical steps to uprooting the anxiety embedded in your response to the unknown, show you how to strengthen your faith resilience through God's Word, and inspire you to live in hopeful anticipation of God's goodness.</i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm such a fan of Christine Caine! I love when I come across books at just the right time. And this book was just what I needed! Christine shares how she's had to fight against fear despite the doctor's report and refuse to not trust God. She shares stories from others of how they faced the unexpected and how God was with them. This is a book to build your faith and deepen your trust in God. Christine shares so many great things in her book. Some of my favorites:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> </i>- "We cannot shrink back in fear and go forward in faith at the same time. We cannot settle for our <i>less</i> and pursue his <i>more</i> at the same time. It's just not possible."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- "If I focus on God more than the unexpected circumstances, then it is God who will be bigger in my heart and mind, and peace will be my outcome." </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- "I believe God wants to teach us practical ways to trust Him more in our everyday lives so that we won't live holding back. But, to be freed from this kind of fear, we will have to let Him lead us one growth step at a time." I am a teacher and last year God gave me a theme for the year and has given me a theme for the upcoming school year. It's a theme about growth and thriving where I'm at. I've been the type of person who doesn't like change. I like the predictable. But God has been showing me that change is the opportunity for growth. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- "I believe with all my heart that it's possible for every Christian to learn how to live with a faith so confident in God, it's can't be shaken - even when the ground underneath is giving way. That's what Abraham did. God extended to him the same invitation he extends to us - to trust with all his heart - and Abraham said yes, even though he had no idea where his yes would lead." I think this might be my top favorite. We never know how God will use our obedience to take us on the greatest adventures but we have to say yes. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Whether you are a mom of littles, a corporate executive, an involved volunteer, a student, or anything in between, you are busy. From the moment you wake up until you fall into bed, you are on the go-go-go: multitasking, taking care of others, driving car pool, running errands, filling out paperwork, managing your to-do list. On the run 24/7. Women in today's do-it-all world have more to juggle than at any other time in history. It is easy to become emotionally, physically, and spiritually exhausted. But it doesn't have to be that way.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>God created you to find rest, and this devotional will take you there. It is more than just a daily pause for prayer and encouragement - it is a day-by-day journey of simple, eye-opening moments that lead you from frazzled and frenzied to abundant peace and joy. Even in the midst of the whirlwind. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a great devotional! I've read Shaunti's work before and was excited to review this new book! I love that each day's reading isn't lengthy but not lacking in content either. I like the place to reflect at the end of each reading and write down any thoughts. This devotional was so timely for me because I feel like I'm in such a busy season and need to just settle down. I love the format for each day's reading: a quote, verse, reading for the day and reflection. What I'm learning in my life and what the devotional is reminding me of is that I can't do everything. Two takeaways from the book: "We must not feel bad for devoting ourselves to the season God has called us into" and "...rather than picking good things to do and asking God to bless them, we need to look to see where God is working, and go join Him." This is a book for women at any season in their life; everyone can walk away with something. </div>

<i>What is truth? This has become the defining question of our time. But while everyone has an opinion, truth, it seems, is getting harder and harder to find. Perhaps that's because we are searching for something when we should be looking for someone. Truth has a name. More ancient than time and more present than this moment, truth is not a river that changes with the cultural currents, but a rock - immovable, invincible, unshakeable - and the cornerstone of all we are and ever dream to be. Theologically deep yet intimately accessible, Adamant will be an anchor for your soul in a raging sea of opinions, giving you a clear sense of direction in a wandering world.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm such a fan of Lisa Bevere! I did the devotional for this book on the <a href="https://www.bible.com/" target="_blank">Bible app</a><i> </i>and really liked it and then being able to read and review the book was an added bonus! I feel like this topic is something women today are so hungry to hear. It's so easy to become wrapped up in seeking approval from others that we miss what God says about us. Lisa talks about how we're safe in Christ. "Our position in Christ is not based on our ability to hold on. The moment we hide ourselves in him, we are secured in his ability to hold us. In Christ, our Rock, our Adamant, our Cornerstone, we are safe." I love what she says about faith! "Faith is the hidden quickening of hope that leaps within us to help us believe there can be more." And she talks about Jesus as our Adamant. "On the cross, this Rock, Jesus, was opened once again, and this time blood and water flowed from his side...water to wash and blood to redeem." I read that and had to stop. I've heard that before but it got my attention this time. The importance of both the water and the blood. And she goes on. "The goodness of our Rock is impervious to our awfulness. As our Adamant encounters our flaws, they become as dust in the presence of his perfection. It is not that he is unaware of our violations. He sees the pain and shame that our willful choices bring upon ourselves and others. It is just that he cannot help but be what he is...good and merciful. He is the Lord and Savior of all, and any who throw their broken lives on his adamant mercy are transformed." This was such a great book!</div>

<i>Shay Henke has mixed feelings about going to her family's next reunion. On the one hand, she'll get to see everyone in her mama's family - folks she loves unconditionally. On the other hand, she knows there'll be more drama than you can shake a stick at. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>The days leading up to the event bring one surprise after another. First Shay must deal with her sister-in-law's deep, dark secret. Then she has to contend with the childish ways of her business-mogul twin cousins. And when her high school crush wants to be her date to the reunion...well, it may have been a dream come true for Shay's teen self, but the woman she's become doesn't know what to make of this. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Shay's contentment is challenged, and she's determined to shake things up a bit. But will she find the excitement she's looking for, or will Shay realize she prefers her quiet and predictable life? One thing is certain: Life in the Bucklin family is never boring.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I loved this book! As a Southern girl myself, this book was right up my alley! I had to get used to the point of view switching with each chapter as I had to remember who was who but then it made the story more interesting as the story switched from character to character. I thought the characters sweet and charming and and found myself laughing at Shay's family's antics. This is a story for anyone who has those family members you just have to love. I liked reading about Shay's journey in finding a job she enjoyed (and couldn't help but think of the timing from one job to the next as God's perfect timing) and that she was brave enough to take that leap! Though fiction, this book encouraged me in my own life. To pursue that thing that I may be scared to do and live boldly!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>It's easy to feel overwhelmed and ill-equipped to deal with your personal finances. You wonder if you will ever experience financial freedom. you want to spend money on what matters, but you don't know how. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>With twenty years of professional experience, financial advisor Emily G. Stroud knows that money can be one of the great causes of stress in life - but it doesn't have to be that way. Finances, in fact, can be a great source of joy, security, and hope. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Faithful Finance<i> includes Emily's ten secrets to managing money with confidence. Presented in a conversational style, this practical guide offers ten simple but life-changing principles that work for every financial situation, every income level, and every stage of life.</i> </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wanted to read this book to get a basic foundation for beginning to invest and this is a great start! I like how detailed Emily is but also how she breaks things down for those who aren't familiar with the terminology (like me!). Investing is something that had seemed overwhelming and elusive but now is easier to understand and I have an idea of where to start! After reading this book, I now have some direction in how to begin investing and continuing to save. As someone in my early thirties, I'm thinking about purchasing a home in the near future and it's so helpful to read about the different kind of loans and which I need to pursue. I feel like the book can be summed up with these words: "Goals are extremely important because they give you direction. If you do not have a plan, you will inevitably lose focus. As a result, you won't make wise decisions with your finances." This is a great book for those wanting to know more about being wise with their finances!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>"The train taking nineteen-year-old teacher Christy Huddleston from her home in Asheville, North Carolina, might as well be transporting her to another world. The Smoky Mountain community of Cutter Gap feels suspended in time, trapped by poverty, superstitions, and century-old traditions.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>But as Christy struggles to find acceptance in her new home, some see her - and her one-room school - as a threat to their way of life. Her faith is challenged and her heart is torn between two strong men with conflicting views about how to care for the families of the Cove. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Yearning to make a difference, will Christy's determination and devotion be enough?"</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was very excited to review this book! I remember watching <i>Christy</i> on TV when I was little, so when I think of her, I picture Kellie Martin. It was her, along with the rest of the cast that I imagined as I read this book. Reading about Christy's life and her journey, it kept reminding me of my own life. I really liked one of the conversations between Miss Alice and Christy. Miss Alice was talking about their job in Cutter Gap. "One of our tasks here is to show folks a God who wants to give them joy. How they need joy! They have such hard lives..." And that's our job as well. To show God's love to others. I like the honesty of Christy; I found myself identifying with her more and more as I moved deeper into the story. She had to battle within herself to decide whether or not she would stay and teach or return to what was comfortable. But she said, "nor did I want to be a quitter." Her prayer not long after that statement is something I think we all can relate to. Her prayer, to me, is a moment of surrender. Of exchanging her plans for what God would have her do. "Somehow this Cove was my Cove. The children were my children. Little as I had to give, I had to give it here. It was as Miss Alice had said last night, we have to decide to give - even in hard spots where there's lots of evil...Anyway if You can use me here in this Cove, well, here I am."' I love the humor is this book and the heart. The people Christy met through her journey played a huge part in her life. People to encourage her and befriend her. People possibly placed there by God for that moment. We all need people in our lives to listen and make us laugh and encourage us when we need it. I think back to my first year as a teacher and felt much like Christy did: overwhelmed with the task before me, unsure if I had made the right choice and contemplating quitting. But that's what makes this story so timely for me. God is showing me something about persevering. Of not giving up when it seems too hard. And that's where this book comes in. Christy is working on that same lesson. Though her story takes place in 1912, it's just as relevant today as it was back then. </div>

<i>Many of us only dream of traveling to the Holy Land. Very few, like Israel's top aerial photographer, Ron Gafni, soar above the craggy mountain ranges of Masada, the salty Dead Sea, and the iconic locations where Jesus walked. </i>Israel - God's Heart - Landscapes and Legacy<i>, beautifully captures the ancient landscapes of this great nation, as well as presents the legacy of God's redemption plan for the world.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I really enjoyed this book! I would love to travel to Israel some day - to see where the Bible unfolded! I like what it says on the first page: "The land of historical sites linked to the most decisive events in the history of humankind." The pictures are stunning! It just amazes me to see pictures of Capernaum<i>, </i>Nazareth and the Jordan River. And I like the narrative that runs through the book. It just all comes together to beautifully show such an important part of our Christian faith. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3iAEO2ev6qrUFuy-6piIg3CD8tN7rCsgcj_ehrCI5U7adBAQp2bcDwgijIMsU3BibiCjZMLPQLfDVEfKwiwq-JrWW7pzdJseAegvqJzxUKMtyQ1uWfvTaRl_P0BCU5OdkK-r1YmIS0VtR/s1600/61ujeUL48bL._SX321_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="323" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3iAEO2ev6qrUFuy-6piIg3CD8tN7rCsgcj_ehrCI5U7adBAQp2bcDwgijIMsU3BibiCjZMLPQLfDVEfKwiwq-JrWW7pzdJseAegvqJzxUKMtyQ1uWfvTaRl_P0BCU5OdkK-r1YmIS0VtR/s320/61ujeUL48bL._SX321_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>There was something different about the way Jesus communicated with the lost: He didn't force answers upon people. He asked questions. So why don't we?</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Following Christ's lead, Randy Newman has been using a questioning style of evangelism for decades. In this proactive book, he provides practical insights to help Christians engage others in meaningful spiritual conversations. He challenges us to examine how we think about people, their questions, and our crucial message. </i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I found this book insightful and interesting! I've never thought about how Jesus would often answer questions with questions and it makes sense! Reading this book has helped me to see how I can be more effective at talking to people about Jesus. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I like how Newman gives possible conversations to allow the reader to see how things could go. To see how answering a question with a question would look and provoke thinking and ultimately understanding. "Answering a question with a question, then, has significant advantages over using direct answers. It brings to the surface the questioner's assumptions. It also takes the pressure off you - the one being asked - and puts the pressure on the one doing the asking. Shifting the burden of the response is important because as long as we're on the defensive, the questioners are not really wrestling with issues. They're just watching us squirm." I feel like the book can be summed with with these sentences: "I'm proposing a style of evangelism that is a dialogue more than a sales pitch. I'm pleading for conversations that lead to conversions, rather than presentations that lead to preconceptions. I'm encouraging the use of questions more than the use of answers."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a great book for those who want to do a better job of understanding what they believe and why and being able to help those understand who want to know more about the Christian faith. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>After a devastating heartbreak three years ago, genealogist and historical village owner Nora Bradford decided that burying her nose in her work and her books is far safer than romance in the here and now.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Unlike Nora, former Navy SEAL John Lawson is a modern-day man, usually 100-percent focused on the present. However, when John, an adoptee, is diagnosed with an inherited condition, he's forced to dig into the secrets of his ancestry.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>John enlists Nora's help to uncover the identity of his birth mother, and as they work side by side, this pair of opposites begins to suspect that they just might be a perfect match. But can their hope for a future survive their wounds from the past?</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm a fan of Becky Wade and was excited to read another of her books! I always enjoy a book with great banter between the two main characters and this book did not disappoint! I like how John described Nora as real but guarded and capable but vulnerable. I feel like that's something every girl can relate to! And I love Nora's love for vintage. And I'll admit I laughed out loud at John telling Nora he would carry her bag "...even though he felt like a wuss every time he put her bag with its green trim and bright pink monogram over his shoulder." I wanted to cry when John pushed Nora away, telling her he only saw his father when he looked in the mirror. I love how Nora put it in her letter to John: "All along, God knew you were Brian's son and He knew I was my mother's daughter. I believe that He brought us together on purpose, which explains why we're such a good match even though we're not much of a match on paper at all." I just enjoyed the sweetness of John and Nora's story. And his grand gesture for Nora at the end? Oh goodness. It was a great end to the story! This was a great, fun read and I look forward to reading about the other Bradford sisters! I suspect Willow and Corbin will find a way to get back together and I keep hoping Zander will tell Britt how he feels! <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>What were you born to do? Who were you created to be? What's the yearning deep within your soul? What if you could live into that very purpose? This kind of living requires us to see ourselves as instruments designed to be used for the glory of God. But most of us don't see ourselves this way. Instead, we resign to be spectators in the audience, still waiting for our names to be called - to be cast in that next big role. Of course, we all hope to be selected. We end up auditioning for life, always striving to make the cut and gain approval. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Written by a professional actress who spent years chasing after her own fame, </i>Chasing Famous<i> empowers us to bravely step into the role God has for us - no longer seeking after our own fame but joyfully making God's name famous - knowing we have been selected to stand center stage and proclaim His renown to all who will listen. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I really enjoyed this book! As I was reading, I would be reminded of things I've read in other books or talked about with others. Pretty much all through the book, God kept confirming things like this for me! Lisa had me hooked from the first page: "But the Bible is clear - God wants to use the story of our lives to radiate His fame. We exist for Him. We've been rescued for Him. He doesn't point His finger at our mistakes and screwups. Rather, He points us to the stage so that we can share with the world how truly glorious He is. Will we bravely accept the role He intends for us to play?" And it's this realization that God keeps showing me. We're here to bring Him glory! Our lives should be a reflection of who He is and His love for the world. It's an amazing thing to take hold of but also a little overwhelming. And then the doubts start to settle in of how could God use us when we've made mistakes? What will others think? But I like what Lisa says to that: "But in actuality, telling our stories glorifies God as people see that only He could transform our lives. They watch His grace unfold through us." And then there's the story of Hosea and Gomer. It's one of my favorite stories because of how it portrays God's relentless love. "God provided Hosea as a mirror to Israel to show His unreserved love for them despite their rebellion to go after other lovers." Even though people reject God and try to run from them, His love for them doesn't stop. It's an amazing thing! <i>Chasing Famous</i> is a great book to push us in our faith to do more and go farther for God. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>The arrival of the new Earl of Hawkesbury has the entire village aflutter - everyone except Lavina Ellison, that is. In fact, in Livvie's eyes, he is just as arrogant and thoughtless as his brother - who stole the most important person in her world.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Nicholas is weighed down by guilt, by ancestral obligations, and by the legacy of war. He hadn't anticipated that a perfunctory visit home would engage either his mind or his heart. Then the hoydenish, intelligent, and very opinionated Miss Ellison challenges him to see past his pain and pride. But between society's opposition, his brother's reckless past, and a shocking family secret, there may be too many obstacles for the two of them to ever truly get along. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was such a fun read! I loved the interaction between Nicholas and Lavina! <i>The Elusive Miss Ellison</i> is a sweet story of forgiveness and second chances. Both characters had to summon their courage. There's one line I highlighted in the book: "faith demanded courage; his future required hope." I think that's true of life in general. We must trust that God is guiding our steps and know that His plans for us are good. I really like the fact that when Nicholas and Lavina first met, it was with her bent down in her garden. And the story ended with Nicholas finding her there once more but he was there not to visit her father...but in pursuit of her. This was an all around good read! I enjoyed the humor, was excited when Nicholas surrendered his life to God and couldn't help but smile at such a sweet ending!<br />

<i>Fights with your husband and kids. Unhappiness when things don't match your version of perfect. Tension, anger, fear - it all begins with a heart that craves control. When your vision of how life should be replaces God's vision, you doom your quest for security, peace and joy before it even starts. Thankfully, there is a better way. Join Shannon as she shares what she has discovered about her own control struggles and about God from studying Control Girls in the Bible. <div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I really enjoyed this book! I just finished reading a book about Sarah and her struggle with waiting on God so for a chance to read about some other women in the Bible (including Sarah as well) was exciting! I like how Shannon sets up the book by talking about Eve and the full impact of her decision to eat the forbidden fruit. She made some points that I've never though of it before but make complete sense. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When Eve chose to eat the fruit, she tried taking the lead in her relationship with Adam. God tells Eve in Genesis 3:16, "<span class="text Gen-3-16" id="en-KJV-72">and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." What Shannon pointed out is that the desire this verse is talking about is the desire to <i>control</i> Adam. "As a daughter of Eve, I am infected with a desire to control." And this is the battle we all face as women. She talks about the struggle women have with wanting their husbands to lead but when they fail, the women step up, causing an imbalance in the relationship. Shannon uses a friend of hers as an example. "When Jennifer took the lead, she caused her husband to feel irrelevant. But by respectfully honoring her husband's input and being leadable, she activated the hero-leader inside of him. The Bible validates this chain reaction that Jennifer discovered. Have you noticed that the Bible always gives instructions to the wife first? It's because a husband can't follow his instructions until his wife follows hers." I like how easy the book is to read. Each chapter is broken down into short lessons, making it perfect for slowing down and really digesting each section. I also like the questions at the end of each lesson and the verse to meditate on. <i>Control Girl</i> is a great book to challenge and encourage us as women!</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>It's easy to believe in God when a promise is new and fresh, bubbling with life. It's hard when the years pass and nothing changes. It's hard to keep praying, keep hoping, keep believing. It's hard when those you love betray you, when desperation strikes, when your own plans backfire, and still God does not fill the emptiness. But what if this God of the waiting room is calling us to more?"</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was really excited to read this book! It was earlier this year that God showed me something about Abraham and Sarah. For the longest time, I've looked at Sarah as an example of what <i>not</i> to do. She ran ahead of God and looked what happen. I don't want to be like Sarah. But then God showed me something. He showed me that Abraham and Sarah's story is a story about His faithfulness. Even when Sarah messed up, because God keeps His promises, He still blessed the descendants that came from Ishmael...because God promised to make Abraham's descendants great. That's just amazing to me! So, when I saw this book come along to review, I knew I wanted to be a part. And as I'm going through a season of waiting myself, this was a "right time, right place" book for me.<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Waiting for Wonder</i> is a book to take your time with and highlight and make notes as you read. I like the parts in each chapter that tell Sarah's story from her possible point of view. I like all the backstory Marlo provides to the time period of Sarah, giving me a better understanding of her life and what it meant for her to be barren. I love how Marlo points out that God chose Sarah <i>because</i> she was barren. "The biblical account affirms that God looks barrenness in the face and makes his promise anyway. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say he promises <i>because</i>. From the beginning of Sarai's "chosenness" God chose the impossible, he chose to transform, he chose the redemption of her shame, and ours. He did not call a fertile woman to birth a nation. He chose a barren one...on purpose." Marlo talks about how not only did Sarah run ahead of God by giving Hagar to Abraham but Abraham also took matters into his own hands when he lied to Pharaoh that Sarah was his sister. He was basically throwing the promise of a son away in order to spare his life. But God stepped in. "This is a God who is not thwarted by the betrayals, mistakes, fears, or hurtful actions of others. Others may create difficult circumstances in our lives. We may even create the difficult circumstances ourselves. But none of that can derail God's promises. God can make things right." There is so much more I can say about this book! I like the personal stories Marlo includes (especially the one about the balloon!) to help illustrate her points. This is one of those books I know I'll go back to when I need reminders about God's faithfulness and His perfect timing. </div>

<i><span class="font_regular">Brian was
raised on "the wrong side of the tracks" in inner-city Alabama. Now, at
nineteen, with a troubled past and juvenile record, Brian struggles to
earn a living and find a life purpose. When he journeys to New York on a
chance trip, Brian meets and falls in love with Shannon; a bright eyed,
aspiring actress from California.</span></i>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /><span class="font_regular">Brian returns to Alabama stirred
by Shannon's courage and passion for life. With a new zest and reason
for living, Brian is determined to turn himself into a man worthy of her
love. Unable to afford college, Brian discovers the Os Guinness
Scholarship, which provides free tuition to Pepperdine University for
Irish students who desire to train for Ireland's ministry. With some
innovative thinking, Brian fakes his Irish citizenry, accepts the
scholarship, and moves to Southern California to attend school and
pursue Shannon. </span></i>
</div>
<i>
</i><div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /><span class="font_regular">However, when </span><span style="text-align: justify;">Brian</span><span class="font_regular">
visits Alabama, all the lies come crashing down and Brian comes face to
face with a past he thought was finished. Now, Brian must make a
choice: lose Shannon by spinning more lies and choosing vengeance in
hopes of putting his past to rest. Or choose honesty and forgiveness and
embrace a new life with the only woman he ever loved.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span class="font_regular"> </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="font_regular"><i>Alabama Irish </i>was an book I found myself quickly pulled into, curious as to how Brian's story would turn out. It wasn't until I was over halfway through the book that I made the connection that Brian's friend, Finn, and his girlfriend, Eden, are from another story, <i>The Mason Jar.</i> I've not read many books that are told from a male perspective - or written by a male - but I enjoyed it. I think Brian's story is very relatable.<i> </i>He came from a less than ideal situation and was determined to do something about it. This is a book about love, fighting for what you want, not giving up, and learning to forgive. I think, in some way, all of us are broken. We all have something we're going through or been through and it's overcoming those things that make us stronger. It's these things that also make us who we are. </span><span class="font_regular">I think one of my favorite parts of the story is when Shannon has read Brian's journal. She comes to see him and tells him she loves him. Shannon tells him that several times, knowing he needs to hear it more than once. Two broken people come together to help heal each other. I like how their story ends. That they both get to travel together - and part of that involves visiting Ireland. I think Brian is a realistic character. Sometimes you read a story and it's great but you know people aren't that put together. Brian has baggage and some anger he's holding onto. My heart broke for him and also Paul when Brian went to visit him at his home. How both men were hurting and Paul let Brian hit him again and again. It's like that saying: hurt people hurt people. I'd like to think if the story would have went into more detail that somehow Brian would have made his way back to Paul and told him he forgave him. So they could both start to heal from that awful night. <i>Alabama Irish</i> is one of the few books I've read where I'm satisfied with the ending. All the things Brian needed to overcome were addressed. He ended up with Shannon, got a job at the school that helped change his life, was going to counseling, working on his Master's degree and letting his story help at-risk youth who were in a similar situation. Overall, a good read with a happy ending!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>He goes to the pastor and to several others in the church and tries to get

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Finally, it comes down to him having to make a choice: is he going to take

<i>This film encourages people to stand up for what they know is right,

social issues. It addresses the spirit of retreat as it pertains to engaging

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a fabulous movie! I feel like Christian movies tend to get a bad wrap for different reasons but this movie, though tackling a heavy subject, is well done and pulls you in from the start! I like what Jesse says at the beginning of the movie and feel it sums up his journey. "I've never questioned where God is leading me, even if it's a little uncomfortable." And what Pastor Gil tells him when Jesse shares his concerns about the abortion clinic. He tells Jesse, "there's nothing you can do." I think we all sometimes can feel helpless at not knowing where to begin when it comes to helping others or wanting to help fight a grand-scale issue (i.e., homelessness, poverty, human trafficking, etc.).<i> </i>But Jesse does something about what's bothering him. He takes action. And he's immediately met with opposition. Another line from the movie I like is what he says to Pastor Gil as the opposition is heating up. When the pastor wants him to be quiet. "It isn't about activism. This is about being a voice for the voiceless. About speaking up for those who can't speak for themselves." I think one of the biggest take aways for me is the impact of one person. That one person <i>can</i> do something. Towards the end of the movie when Jesse is faced with being arrested should he go back to the abortion clinic, I was reminded of Exodus 14:14: "The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." Just when he was willing to make that sacrifice for what he believed in, an army of people showed up to take his place. People he had impacted; people he had helped. I think this movie is a beautiful story of being God's hands and feet to help those who are hurting. </div>

<i>If you're tired of dwelling in busyness and noise, then perhaps one word a day can change your life. Award-winning author Lucinda Secrest McDowell knows that if you spend time each day turning on God's Word for wisdom and guidance, your faith can flourish and grow.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Through short and inspiring readings, McDowell unpacks a single word - such as mercy, beauty, gratitude, or grace - to reveal a biblical blessing or challenge relevant to where you are. Full of stories and illustrations to empower you to live the word you have just read, each devotional ends with a benediction, written as if God were speaking directly to you.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>These "dwelling places" that offer the joy of God's promise and presence cover four seasons: fall, Advent, Lent, and summer. Whether in the midst of busy holiday schedules, holy days, ordinary moments, or changing seasons, a deeper faith can be as simple as a single word. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I really like how the focus for each reading is simply one word. Each devotion is only two pages but those two pages are so powerful! One of my favorite readings is on the word "sea." McDowell quotes Anne Morrow Lindbergh: "For it is not merely the trivial which clutters our lives but the important as well." That's so true! How often are we busy with truly important things? I feel like that's the goal of this book: to be intentional but also purposeful with each reading. Packing a lot of information in just two pages. This same reading uses one of my favorite verses: "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll receive your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest" (Matthew 11:28-30). I wrote in the margin the rest of that passage: "Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace." I love that phrase <i>rhythms of grace.</i> What caught my eye with this book is that it's broken up into seasons. The only disadvantage to the book is that there's only 130 different readings so there's not enough for each day of the year but it's still a great resource! <i>Dwelling Places </i>is a great way to start each day!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This dessert. Oh, it turned out pretty perfect! I like it for several reasons. One is that it only takes a handful of ingredients. Two, it was fairly simple to make. Three, it tasted really good! I've made it twice and followed the recipe as is. But I'm thinking next time it might be fun to add some chopped Reese Cups to the top and less Oreo. I feel like the Oreo makes it really sweet - maybe it's the cream. I did a layer of Oreo before the whip and also on top so I might scale back the next time and just use around ten Oreos or so. Regardless, this is an easy recipe and tastes REALLY good! You can look at the full recipe from Nikki at Chef In Training by clicking <a href="http://www.chef-in-training.com/2012/11/better-than-anything-oreo-cake/" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

I came across these verses last night and wanted a visual. So I found a picture of the Promised Land and added the verses (thanks Pic Monkey!). In Deuteronomy 11, God is giving the Israelites some instructions before they go into the Promised Land. He's already given the ten commandments and the rest of Deuteronomy is God laying out guidelines, if you will, of what the Israelites are to do after they cross the Jordan. But these are the words that stood out to me. I was thinking of it in terms of God's word. When it says, "place these words on your heart. Get them deep inside you," I thought about holding onto a verse that really speaks to you in a specific time in your life. Maybe it's a verse about peace or strength or healing. But you cling to that verse, you get it <i>deep inside you</i> and you don't let go. That verse gives you strength because you're about to get your breakthrough. You're about to cross your own Jordan River! And at the beginning of the book of Joshua, God tells the people to be strong. Three times in chapter one He says those words. He knew what the people would face. And then He says, "...do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go" (v. 9). No matter what we face, no matter how we're feeling, God is always with us. Always.</div>

<i>Make time for you - every day </i></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Do you want to learn how to make time for the things you love, deepen friendships, and take better care of yourself? Begin a journey of self-discovery as you explore your passions and overcome obstacles in this meaningful book. You'll come away refreshed, invigorated, and excited to live a more creative and fulfilled life.</i></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know I'm not the only one who feels like I just don't have enough time. Don't have enough time for work, church commitments, friends and then just time for <i>me</i>. Right? This book is a great way to figure out how to make it work! I like what Jessica says on the first page: "Now, please understand, this is not a time-management book because <i>My Fringe Hours</i> is not about doing more. It's about discovering ways to help you <i>be </i>more creative and <i>live</i> more fulfilled." And I think that's the key. Throughout the book, Jessica gives nine principles to help you make the twenty-four hours we each have be more productive and purposeful. She talks about how often, we are our own worst enemy, feeling guilty for not being able to get everything done and/or taking time for ourselves. She talks about finding balance between the things that need to get done and what things could possibly be cut out. There are lots of hands-on activities such as a scale to fill out, listing the things you wish you had time for on one side and all the current things you're doing on the other. It's a great visual to let see what could be removed to allow time for some of the things you'd like to do. I really enjoyed this book! It's a quick read and I like all of the "my turn" activities that are throughout to help me apply what I'm reading. I highlighted the entire last page with Jessica's Final Reflections because it really does sum up the whole book:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My prayer is that as you make time for yourself, you will grow more confident in who you are and experience deeper satisfaction with how you spend your time. I believe that as you pursue the practice of self-care, your life will become defined by gratitude and joy - not because you've done it all perfectly but because you've realized what God knew all along: that <i>you</i> are a unique and one-of-a-kind treasure. And this world needs you - the best possible you. So go ahead. Sign up for that knitting class. Take a long run. Pull out that journal and start filling its blank pages. Make yourself a priority. Invest time in the you that God made you to be. Because you are worth it. This is your new beginning - and it's going to be beautiful. </div>

I've started another blog. It was a big step for me. But it was <i>a step</i>. I needed to do <i>something</i> to move forward in some desires God's stirring up in me. So this was the beginning. You can find out more by heading over there: <a href="http://radaphblog.blogspot.com/">http://radaphblog.blogspot.com/</a>. Right now, I'm planning on posting on Mondays. I need to find a balance between that blog, this one and I actually have another one about teaching. Now that it's summer, I have the time to plan and figure it out. <i>Someday</i> is a word I try to avoid. So I've done something. I've taken a step forward and am excited to see what happens next!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I just got back from my sixth missions trip. The last three I've been on have been out of the country but this time we stayed within the States. There were reasons for this and because of this decision, we went to the site of my very first missions trip: the <a href="http://www.dreamcenter.org/" target="_blank">Los Angeles Dream Center</a>. If you've never heard of it, it's an amazing place! The Dream Center reaches out to the city of Los Angeles through food trucks, medical care, cleaning up trash off the streets and parks, praying for those in the community, and visiting the homeless on Skid Row - all in an effort to show God's love. They also have a rehab program for those wanting to get their life back together. There are so many parts to what the Dream Center does. I was amazed again and again at the influence the Dream Center is making. So now that we're back home, I must face the question yet again that comes up after every trip: what do I do now? I was gone for a week and it was great but now what? This year I feel like it's a little more clearer for me. One of the biggest - and yet smallest - things we did on our trip was...smile at people. Something so simple has a HUGE impact! I want to <i>notice</i> people and not be so busy with what I need to do that I just walk by those who are hurting or in need or just need someone to listen to them. Do we have to go somewhere else in order to do mission work? No. There is work to do right where we are. So I'm going to get busy tilling the ground in my own mission field...until the next time I pack my suitcase :)</div>

<i>Two
years ago, the building of San Francisco were shaken off their foundations and burned to the ground in the devastating earthquake and fire. As the city rebuilds brick by brick, new hope is rising. But Elizabeth King is also trying to rectify the rubble in her own life - and she's not sure anything will be able to erase her past. But she doesn't anticipate finding new love. </i><br />
<br />
<i>Hoping to right her wrongs, Elizabeth commits herself to helping young girls escape brothels in Chinatown, one of the darkest sections of San Francisco.</i><br />
<br />
<i>When she meets rising attorney Charles McKinley, who desires to save the city from corruption, and has dashing good looks to boot, she can't help feeling hopeful. However, she soon realizes while many loved ones may not turn her away after discovering her secret, the man she loves will have no choice. Elizabeth's past bears great consequences for both their futures. </i><br />
<br />
What caught my attention with this book is the attention to human trafficking. I wasn't really aware of the prevalence of human trafficking until my first missions trip out of the country to Guatemala in 2013. Side note: I've since done a little research and also came across Christine Caine and the great work she does to stop it through her non-profit, the A21 Campaign. I liked this book. I had a little bit of hard time getting into it but I was soon pulled into the story. I want to be like Donaldina - passionate about her cause and not willing to let others get in her way! I laughed at the scene of her pulling the officer behind her, hat askew as she barreled into the judges office! And the ending was beautifully sweet. I love what Charles told Elizabeth; it's what I pray for in my future husband. "I want you beside me every day of my life. I want you to argue with me and keep me on my toes. I want you to spur me to greater actions on behalf of God's kingdom." I love that Elizabeth finally let God's grace be enough for her - that she was able to let go of her hurt and give it all to Him. Such a beautiful story of love and redemption!<br />
